In my mad attempt to try and get 2 issues in the can before Emerald City Comic Con I wanted to acknowledge an upcoming project I'm very excited about. If you've been around the webimathingies today you'll see that BOOM Studios has announced it's latest addition to it's Disney Afternoon comic line-up; DUCK TALES (Woo hoo. It's okay everyone does it automatically anyway.)
If you've read my blog you know what a big influence all things Carl Barks and Scrooge was on my work. And while I'm on DW for the foreseeable future, I knew I had to contribute at least SOMETHING to this book. I had a chance to meet writer Warren Spector of "Epic Mickey" fame at NYCC and his vision and passion for the Disney Ducks was infectious. Luckily I had an in with editor Chris Burns and he was able to throw a couple of cover bones my way. Since the color version is all around for public view, I thought I'd give you a look at the inks.
And as long as I'm showcasing the black and white art, here's a few more of the inks for the upcoming DW 10 and 11 covers as well.
And here's the inks for next month's annual covers.
I will post again before the end of the month with details on my plans for ECCC in Seattle and C2E2 in Chicago. I hope to see you there. Bring cake.

I'm pretty jazzed about this announcement. Also- I friggen work for this company and had no idea! What the?!?!
ReplyDeleteWell, as much as I know I should enjoy this, I can't help but feel bitter.
ReplyDeleteThis means we'll have to wait again for MONTHS for a possible TaleSpin comic, which may just never happen :/
What about that TaleSpin drawing you talked about? That sure could help smooth things up for me...
For now it seems to me as if Boom just doesn't care for it. Which I don't understand. It's the last major Disney Afternoon title without a comic. I just hope it doesn't get unfairly forgotten...I wish they could show it some love, even if it would only be a limited series or reprints.
Hey Steet,
ReplyDeleteSorry I will post that picture sooner than later.
From my meager knowledge of the situation, the problem with Talespin is on 2 fronts. One is that the characters involved originated from the feature films which involves a whole 'nuther set of licensing. And I think the other problem with any TS licensing in general is that Louis Prima's (the voice of the original King Louie) estate is involved with some kind of legal dispute with Disney over his "voice likeness". Which prevents any further video or other merchandise from being released.
Oh no...:/
ReplyDeleteI knew about this, but I didn't think Louis Prima's lawsuit issue would be a problem for a comic (no voice) Also it happened in 2002, is this going to be lasting forever?
Also, Disney is releasing new TaleSpin vinylmation : http://eventservices.disney.go.com/static/vinylmation/blog.html
So that means it CAN be done, right?
I thought Boom had licensing for classic Disney characters, that should have included Jungle Book too? (ok, I guess it's much more complex than that)
In that case, I give my biggest support for Boom if they are actually trying to bring it back. I really wish I could help on that matter...All I can do is maintain my fansite so that it stays popular as much as possible.
Anyway, thanks for the complete answer, and I can't wait for that pic!!!
Keep up the awesome work!!!
@_@ I want a giant poster of that tentacular inked cover. It's...so pretty...
ReplyDeletealso wow - my name appears to have been changed into a serial number. creepy. ~anthropochick
ReplyDeleteVery nice outlines! I love the way you draw Steelbeak and make High Command appropriately menacing.
ReplyDeleteAmazing covers as always, Rockerduck, Bombi and the TV Beagles, what a perfect blend of the classic and modern. If only you had four arms and two heads. Then you could be working on Duck Tales and Darkwing at the same time. Plus you'd get to shake hands and pose for pictures at the cons while sketching something for the fans. Here's to mad gene-splicing science!
ReplyDeleteDisappointed to hear we may never see TaleSpin comics...I love it even more the ducks series (no offense!)
ReplyDeleteI know I've said it before, but I love your inks. You work with great colorists, but I'd so buy your books in black and white.
ReplyDeleteReally excited for this new DuckTales series!
I hope we're able to see the incentive cover for the upcoming Darkwing annual issue soon; I already have a copy on order, but have no idea what it looks like, heh.
ReplyDeleteRare Darkwing Character designs? Have you seen the designs featured on the Creative Capers website? They were the studio that did most of the animation in the Disney Interactive game. Visit their website, under Creative Design in the Consumer Products tab under Disney, the first four pages are rare Darkwing vehicle designs that might be fun to use in the future?
