SDCC Wrap-up and the beginning of the end...

Another San Diego Comic Con is in the books and it's time to get back to work. But first I want to thank everyone who made my first foray into Artist's Alley really spectacular. Amy Mebberson and I were swamped from preview night until 15 minutes after close on Sunday. Everybody who came by our table could not have been nicer. I really hope this is the first of many great years to come. We might even try it without the "Free Beer" banner next time.

Most of the time was spent on sketch commissions. I will be posting those to my tumblr feed as the weeks go on. This one of DW doing a "Tex Avery" take was one of my favorites.

We also had quite a few characters stop by the booth but none more impressive than the "Infinite Darkwing that got away". This was actually the young lady who bought our very last issue of last years' SDCC exclusive DW cover so you know she ain't fooling' around with her fandom. Plus her gas gun really worked. I might want to borrow that later.

But speaking of gas guns, tell me you ever saw a cooler sight than this. At one of our Kaboom signings, this cosplayer had the most authentic looking DW prop we'd ever seen. And who better to pose with it than DW creator Tad Stones. Somebody get this man a ratcatcher.

But with all the greatness that happened in San Diego a bit of sad news was finally revealed. Kaboom's Darkwing Duck comic will be coming to an end with issue 18. It was not for lack of sales but just the end of the contract with Disney. I can't thank all of you enough for sticking with the book. Believe me, we have as much fun making it as you have reading it every month. But at least we are going out with a bang with the afore mentioned Darkwing Duck/Duck Tales crossover "Dangerous Currency." The crossover will answer such questions as "Whatever happened to Fenton Crackshell?" "How can Launchpad be in two places at once?" and "Why isn't anyone wearing pants?!?!?!"

So I present the beautiful Amy Mebberson colored covers for Ducktales #5...

Darkwing Duck #17...

Duck Tales #6...

And Darkwing Duck #18...

I'll be back next week with the line art for the covers and details on the plans Amy Mebberson, Cars' comic artist Allen Gladfelter and I have to appear at the ultimate Disney fan experience, D23 this august in Anaheim.

  1. Fingers crossed that Marvel picks up the title and picks you guys again for artists!

  2. Great job! DW totally looks 'Tex Avery'd right now. ;)

It's gonna be a shame that the comic's gonna come to a close around issue 18.

What are you gonna do after DW hangs up his hat, cape and gas gun?

  3. Man, I wish Marvel would actually do something with all the Disney licenses... it's just cruel that Disney is taking them away from a company that was actually doing good work with them. Looking forward to the last issues.

Also, Anna Matronic!? I can't believe you got the most obscure DW character ever on the cover! Nice job!

  4. God bless you and Amy for all the great work you did to keep DW and DuckTales alive and relevant. Marvel would be missing out if they thought they could do better with a new team... reminds me of the Gladstone / Gemstone licensing deal that went sour when Disney thought they could do better. Take care and we'll see you(z) at D23!

  5. kingofmonkeytown, Noe => You're wrong, Disney is not "taking the licence away" from Boom; the contract just expired and Boom won't renew it.

Disney is NOT at fault here. And I think (hope) Marvel has projects for the Disney Afternoon series (and maybe this time we could have a TaleSpin book...)

And if you think Boom is doing a good job with Ducktales...I strongly suggest you to read this!!!

NB : Silvani, thank you SO MUCH for keeping a great quality to Darkwing Duck, despite the things that are happening!

NB 2 : Did you see the message I posted in the previous blog entry?

  6. Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Things are still up in the air as for what happens next. Hopefully hands will be shaked, cards will be exchanged and drunken promises will be made at D23.

As for now, I keep cranking away on the book. I'm real proud of how 16 and this whole arc is turing out.

I did see your comments Steet. (Sorry things are a little nutty here) I think you guys have a great start on the TS story. I look forward to seeing more.

Looking forward to the crossover. I will be involved in the art on both parts but I'm not ready to announce just yet. (Oooo, how ominous)

  7. Steet> I hadn't heard that Boom! chose not to renew the licenses. That seems odd.

And yes, the art in the DuckTales book went downhill fast. It's rarely a good sign when the art is credited to a studio rather than an individual artist.

That said, Mr. Silvani has been kicking butt on the DW book and I will be very sad to see it end.

  8. I'm supporting James Silvani for Marvel to (hopefully) let him continue the Darkwing books! (And I think all the Darkwing Duck fans agree with this!!)

And thanks for the nice comments about our Talespin fan comic! Actually, I have posted page 2 today!

  9. If Disney is smart, they'll start up Darkwing again immediately after switching over to Marvel and not leaving it in limbo for months as they did with that Muppets comic, losing the original creative talent involved in the process. It would be a shame if everyone currently involved in Darkwing had moved on to other projects by the time Marvel started putting out the comic.

  10. It's a shame the comic will conclude so soon after it's creation. It was a great run and your work was always fantastic! If the book gets picked up by Disney for another run, I certainly hope you are on the team to create it!

  11. I just found out about this wonderful series and bought the first two volumes. I am so sad the series is coming to end, but if its your team, I know you'll do an amazing job!

I want to believe the comics will start up again under a new license, and I hope DW will live on forever. T_T

  12. Thanks for the support everyone. I really appreciate it. Believe me I would love to keep doing the book. There's a lot of stories left to tell. As soon as I hear something I will let you know.
And if anyone's going to D23, let the nice folks at Marvel know you want the book to continue.
